Born in Bolton, England, Cunliffe played in the youth ranks of Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, before training with Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers. In 2003 he enrolled at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where under head coach Jeremy Gunn he amassed an impressive 75 goals and 62 assists in 86 games played (82 starts), and was named a three-time All-American, while majoring in psychology.

A Manchester United fan from birth, Cunliffe's parents are Stephen and Penelope Cunliffe. He has an older sister, Francesca, and an older brother, Joshua.

Beginnings: I started playing in clubs when I was about seven: Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United, Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers. Then I played college over here.Nickname: Crafty - it was first on the website and then the guys just picked up on it.
Off the field: I'm a pretty good cricket player.
I'm also a fan of:Manchester United in England, the Colts in American football and the Pistons in basketball.
